About JosephJoseph Tuppen is an experienced Physiotherapist and Accredited Hand Therapist who has a keen interest in sporting injuries and work related injuries. He brings a wealth of knowledge to his hand therapy practice with his dual backgrounds in health research and Physiotherapy.

Joseph's first professional jobs were as a research biochemist, including work to investigate treatments for Hepatitis C virus and work in the USA examining genes implicated in pathogenesis of breast cancer. This experience gives him a broad understanding of disease processes and medical research techniques.

After returning to university and graduating as a Physiotherapist, Joseph decided to specialise in the field of hand therapy. He is an Accredited Hand Therapist with the Australian Hand Therapy Association.

Before joining our team at Northside Hand & Upper Limb Clinic, he was the senior Hand Therapist at Launceston General Hospital in Tasmania. With 7 years of experience in the world of hand injuries, Joseph has significant experience in treating the full spectrum of hand disorders, such as finger dislocations, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, distal radius fractures, crush injuries, burns, joint replacements, Tennis Elbow and people with severe pain conditions such as CRPS. His hand therapy experience also includes a focus on management of acute traumatic injuries such as distal biceps ruptures, tendon lacerations and Boxer's fractures, all in close consultation with world class Plastic and Orthopaedic Hand Surgeons.

Joseph's key areas of interest in hand therapy include optimising outcomes following sporting injuries and in finding and utilising the best treatment techniques for wrist injuries, as well as in optimising thumb function post injury, or degenerative disease.

Ongoing professional activities

Joseph keeps up to date by regular attendance at professional development events and national conferences, including completion of the Australian Hand Therapy Association's Basic and Advanced Trauma courses. He enjoys keeping abreast of recent developments in assessment and treatment techniques by regularly reviewing scholarly journals.

Joseph is a full member of the Australian Hand Therapy Association, a keen cyclist and enjoys early morning rides to the nearby mountains. The tropical lifestyle in sunny Brisbane is a strong contrast to his previous experience of 5 am rides, at 5 chilly degrees in Tasmania.
