WHAT IS A SPRAINED OR FRACTURED FINGER?
Finger dislocations and sprained fingers are common injuries in ball sports where a player or a ball disrupts the ligaments or the tendons in the finger joints.
They can aso easily occur in a work place or at home where you catch the finger on or in something causing it to dislocate or break.
A “break” is the same thing as a fracture the difference being in the severity of the “break”. The Hand Therapist, Occupational Therapist or Physiotherapist will be able to assess your “break” and advise what fracture management program is required.
SPRAINED OR FRACTURED FINGER SYMPTOMS
We often hear finger dislocations and knocks being referred to as sprained fingers. The finger can be bent backwards or sideways and may not be able to go back into place.
If your finger is sprained or fractured, you will experience severe pain when you try and move or use it.
You might have trouble bending or straightening or even touching it, due to the pain. You might even have swelling around the joint in the affected finger.

SPRAINED OR FRACTURED FINGER TREATMENT
See below advice on Sprained or Fractured Finger with or without surgery.
A sprained finger may not have a “fracture” or a “break” and it might just have damaged the soft tissues, tendons and ligaments. Often this is considered the “better” injury when in fact this sort of sprain causes the most complications and needs to be assessed and cared for by a Hand Therapist.
Most sprained or fractured fingers can be treated conservatively without surgery but in cases where surgery may be required the Hand Therapist at Action Rehab Hand Therapy Clinic will be able to advise.
Surgical Approach
In some instances surgery is required for a sprained or fractured finger and the Hand Therapist at Action Rehab Hand Therapy Clinic is experienced in the post operative post surgical rehabilitation of a sprained or fractured finger. We will protect the surgery and advise on the treatment protocol that will help you to regain function as soon as possible.
See below the two treatment approaches for a patient who has sprained or fractured fingers.
Fig 1: Basic Treatment
An aluminium zimmer splint is often used acutely to treat a sprained or fractured finger. This splint does not allow movement of the joints and may cause complications if worn for extended periods.

A custom made water proof orthosis that can be adjusted and adapted for swelling while also allowing showering and swimming is made at your first appointment with your Action Rehab Hand Therapy Clinic Hand Therapist.
